S. David Fineman, a former chairman of the U.S. Postal Service board of governors, has been appointed chairman of the board of directors for the Americas region for DHL Global Mail, the small-package courier service unit of Germany-based Deutsche Post DHL.

Fineman’s experience with the Postal Service complements DHL Global Mail’s extensive ongoing relationship with the U.S.P.S., says Lee Spratt, CEO of DHL Global Mail—Americas. DHL Global Mail aggregates and sorts mail pieces of up to five pounds from shippers and forwards those packages to local postal facilities.

“As one of the largest workshare partners of the U.S.P.S., Global Mail—along with our customers—stands to benefit greatly from Mr. Fineman’s extensive postal expertise,” Spratt says. “Besides his work with the U.S. Postal Service, Mr. Fineman’s experience in international trade and as a corporate director also makes him a tremendous addition to our organization.”

Fineman was nominated to the U.S. Postal Service board by former President Bill Clinton and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 1995. He served for nine years, including the last two as chairman. The board sets the Postal Service’s objectives and oversees its finances and operations. Before he was named U.S.P.S. chairman, Fineman was board vice chairman and chairman of the board’s strategic planning and compensation committees.

In other government work, Fineman spent time on a committee that advised the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative on matters of international trade.

Fineman is also a senior partner at the Philadelphia corporate law firm of Fineman Krekstein & Harris.

DHL Global Mail, which will be exhibiting at the Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition, has continued serving the U.S. market despite the departure of DHL Express, a carrier of parcels of up to 150 pounds that discontinued its domestic U.S. service early last year. DHL Express still handles international shipments for U.S. retailers and other companies..
